Fire and Ice
This Fire burns through humanity
Delights in pain and passion
Consumes all heat and leaves you
Frost-bitten
This Ice freezes beating hearts
Lives for the kill, the thrill
Smothers all in its wake and leaves you
Burning
This Metal ends the toil
Exists for only violence, vengeance
Slaughters all you once were and leaves you
Dead
~H.N. Unsworth
Who knew the dead could be so troublesome? A few have known this fact of life - or death - for years. The Hunters, an elite group of vampire slayers, all know what a vampire is, how to kill one, and how to stay alive. For as long as possible, anyway. They know that a stake through the heart will the trick just fine, beheading works like a charm, and sunlight gives a permanent charring. Hours upon hours of training insure the Hunters don't die when meeting one of these horrible creatures.
"Want some Mac and Cheese?" Elijah asked, pulling out a box.
"Sure," Moira replied as she finished placing the Casso powder around the perimeter of the house.
"When do we start recruiting?" Elijah questioned as he heated a pot on the small stove.
"Tomorrow," Moira said without feeling.
Having lost her old team, Moira is now in the process of building up her forces. But training new recruits doesn't happen over night. It takes time to find willing people, and much more to make them useful. But it hasn't been so bad - Blanding, Utah wasn't exactly a vampire hot-spot. She had time.
"Stay calm. You're safe now," Moira said calmly.
"Who - who are you?" the man asked in a whisper.
"Someone who won't kill you. Let's leave it at that for now," she replied. "Can you tell me your name?"
"Steven," he said. "Where are Cassie and Becka? Are they okay?"
Steve was saved, yes, but the other two had died. Cassie had been executed by Moira herself for being infected with vampirism, and Steve was in vengeance mode. But at least she had a fighter, someone to team with on her hunts. And nothing made a person more dedicated than the loss of a loved one.
"What powers do vampires have? You said they can't turn into stuff, but what can they do?" Cassie wondered.
"They can run pretty fast, as you've seen," Moira started. "They have inhuman strength, but not at a ridiculous level. Besides their fangs, that's it. Well, there are stories, of course, of one that has more power than the rest of them. You know, Dracula. But we've never seen any evidence to support it."
"So there is a Dracula? Or there isn't?" Steve asked.
"Not that we've seen. And, trust me, we've seen a lot," Elijah replied.
Unfortunately for the Hunters, Dracula is real. And he's building his forces just as Moira is. His presence hasn't gone entirely unnoticed, but an alias keeps the Hunters from knowing his true name. Adrian Dimitru is the alluring figure that prowls the shadows now, but his plans consist of more than merely taking out a Hunter base. And he's more than willing to wait for what he truly desires...
